IN the mid-to-late
Eighties I was a regular contributor to a magazine called Video
World. Though the front cover tended to focus on its extensive
coverage of the burgeoning soft porn market, the editor seemed to
harbour worthier aspirations for the rest - probably to his ultimate
cost. I was especially surprised when he commissioned me to write a
piece on the decidedly upmarket Woody Allen, who had just emerged
from his 'serious auteur' phase, and it was this piece that
almost got me a job on the, now long defunct, Face magazine. All
articles were written to order, and usually prompted by a
high-profile video release. Twenty years later, I can no longer vouch for all of the views expressed - especially my enthusiasm for Absolute Beginners. What was I thinking? |
